Nowadays most of the lights used in homes are f luorescent lights. They are a special kind of lights and their structure involves a long narrow tube which is made up of glass with two electrical connections on each side of the metal caps which seals both the ends of the narrow glass tube. The tube is filled with a number of gases like krypton, neon and argon which are basically noble gases. These gases are used to suppress chemical reactions due to electrical discharges inside the tube. Finally the light is produced by the collision of mercury atoms and the other electrons present inside the glass tube. One of the keys to produce light is to produce high speed electrons so that there ae more electrons for the mercury to collide with. The greater the pressure of collision brighter light is produced. This can also be done by heating the filament of the tube.
PRDOCUCTION OF FLUORESCENT LIGHTS
Fluorescent lights are made up of a mixture of phosphors which is blended together. Phosphors are blended together so that the wavelengths are distributed evenly. Nowadays the fluorescent lights are blended with six basic phosphors blends. These phosphor blends includes: cool white, deluxe cool white, deluxe warm white, warm white, white and daylight. The daylight phosphor used is criticized as being cold as it is related to blue light while other lights are related to warm red lights.
HISTORY OF FLUORESCENT LIGHTS
A French physicist Alexandre E Becquerel investigated this phenomenon of fluorescent lights in 1857. He also theorized how the lights work and its properties. He even experimented with these lights by coating the electric discharge with luminescent materials. In this way the popularity of fluorescent lights grew rapidly and now it is considered as one of the most commonly found lights in homes and offices.
DISADVANTAGES OF USING FLUORESCENT LIGHTS
Although fluorescent lights are energy effective and can produce 50-100 watts of energy, they too have a lot of disadvantages. First of all these lights are hard to control. The electrical discharge and the current should be controlled to refrain it from burning. Also the fluorescent lights operation is not that simple as compared to incandescent lights. Another issue with fluorescent lights is that one cannot apply full voltage to it as the current should be controlled. Also the fluorescent lights should be preheated before applying the full voltage.
