Making arrangements for outdoor lighting in a house is entirely different project from indoor lighting arrangements. For example for indoor we need extra powerful lights to brighten up our home but for outdoor low voltage lights at prior distance are seemed to be perfect. Path lighting is the best means of brightening the outdoors so that one can enjoy a calm and peaceful walk in the garden at night time.

There are a lot of ideas available in path lighting but before discussing them it is better to understand the basics of outdoor lighting.


For path lighting fixtures usually accent lights are considered as the best option. These light fixtures are used to draw the attention of everyone towards a specific object or path. Mostly flood lights or high power spot lights are used for this purpose. For outdoor lighting halogen bulbs are more functional than the incandescent bulbs because of their long life consumption. Nowadays fluorescents bulbs are also recommended for path lighting as these are also available now with more life and consume less power.


With the emergence of latest technology in almost every field of life, the solar landscape lighting system is also considered as a better option. These bulbs are lighted by consuming solar energy throughout the day and are the best source of lighting without the consumption of electrical energy.


The issues related to path lighting are quite different from that of indoor lighting. One of the benefit of outdoor lighting is that reflection is no more an issue for them as it is much of a problem in indoor lights. As most of the outdoor surfaces are dark so they do not reflect any kind of light.

Light glare is a problem of outdoor lighting which is formed if the light source is bright enough to produce glare. This glare of light falls directly on the eyes and create much problem. Similarly indirect lights are preferred more over the direct lights. The difference between both sources of light is that the direct outdoor light or the down light throws light directly on the object while the indirect light reflects on the surroundings of the object and creates a soft impression.


For a brighter path lighting it is suggested that lights should be fixed on the following spots,

  • Entrance area
  • Driveway
  • Stair case
  • Open patio
  • Architectural highlighted areas

With a little effort the outdoor of any home can be brighten up perfectly by using efficiently the path lighting.
