Lights were developed for vision when it’s dark around and since their inception they have undergone enormous developments over the years. They are an irreplaceable part of any house or commercial building, and when we talk about lighting and building, it means both inside and outside. Site lightings are the lighting systems associated outside the building. Their primary purpose would be to cover an entire area outside the building and provide enough lighting.
Over the years the lighting systems for Site lights have undergone major transformations. Let’s see the different types of lights that were there and also the modern ones.
These were among the first of the Site lights ever used. Here the electricity passes through a resistive wire which has a high thermal resistance and gives out light. Tungsten is the material usually used. These lamps come is different sizes and shapes depending on the voltage and current supply required. They give out a bring light which is usually yellow. They are known to put some strain on the eyes and are not efficient in terms lumens output. Apart from this, they are also known to consume a lot of power which could result in a huge maintenance cost and they also have a limited range.
One of the first innovation in lights which consumes much less power compared to the incandescent lamps. This type of site lights give off a very bright yet soft white light. This type of lamp has two terminals inside, the anode and the cathode. The electricity creates an arc between the two terminals. Now these lamps are typically filled with mercury gas. The electricity ionizes the atoms of mercury thereby giving off this white light. In spite of these advantages they are not as suitable for the site lightings as some of the other options. There is greater limit to the area which they could illuminate up to. Also the size is not so welcoming. They are generally long tubes. However, a better version of fluorescent lamps were developed with compact size called the CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) which offer all of the positives that were not there in the long lamps.
High Intensity Discharge lamps
This type of Site lights are mostly found outside the commercial buildings. They work similar to the fluorescent lamps, except that the arc between the terminals goes through a high pressure tube, thereby causing the metallic additives to vaporize. They give off a very bright blast of light and are perfect for outdoor locations. They are also known to be quite energy efficient.
LED Light emitting diode
The modern trends in Site lights are the LED lamps. The biggest advantage here is that they consume less than 75% of the power consumed by other categories and still give off bright light on an equal footing. They are known to last longest among all. For a typical outdoor arrangement one needs to have a lot of LEDs combined together thereby giving off a very bright light. There are further steps being taken to make this technology even cheaper.
