Outdoor landscape can be transformed from boring and forgettable to beautiful alluring dramatic exteriors with proper use of light fixtures. All out door décor elements like steps, paths, patios, pools, backyards, etc can be highlighted beautifully with lights. Depending on the purpose and requirement, the lighting can be designed and installed.
Lighting décor techniques
A variety of lighting décor techniques are available to highlight the landscaped gardens, back yards, pathways, water features, planters, nooks and corners etc of houses. Up lighting or spotlighting can be used to focus attention to a particular décor element like an artifact, plant or a mural. Moon lighting or down lighting, like the moon, focuses soft light downwards on desired areas like the plant beds, walkways ,etc,. This sort of lighting décor can be used to emulate the soft cool moonlight. Many dramatic effects can be achieved by moonlighting. Path lighting is designed to outline the path. These fixtures are placed in the ground and more often than not, comprise of solar fixtures.
A combination of these techniques can be used while designing the landscape of the back yard. Led lights both plain and colored lend a dramatic appeal to the gardens.
Energy efficient lighting décor
Outdoor lighting systems are available in two configurations – high voltage and low voltage. The low voltage configuration is more suitable for residential purposes and are less expensive easy to install fixtures. The low voltage systems use transformers to reduce the voltage to the required 12V limit. High voltage systems are large and brighter and are often used by commercial enterprises and in some residences where up lighting is used. Installation of high voltage system is complex and requires professional help and license.
Energy efficient décor can be used while designing outdoor lighting. Use of LED or solar bulbs greatly reduces the energy consumption. These bulbs, apart from serving the utilitarian purpose, enhance aesthetics too. They are bright enough to be used for security purposes. Using reflectors, deflectors and covers, not only ensures more efficient use of power while reducing light pollution. The decorative lights have to be fitted with timers and other controls to turn them off when not required.
