An arc lamp is an electric lamp which manufactures light by forming an arc between two electrodes when electrical energy is supplied. The electrodes are separated from each other by a gap. Why was  Carbon Arc Lamp used?

Carbon arc lamp provides bright light which is extremely good. It can be used to light up a large section of the street or even factory interior which is quite large. This was the only electric light that was available to light up big areas in 1800 -1900.

It was cheaper to light streets using arc lamps than gas or oil lamp. This became an easy and cost-effective solution to lighting problems in the earlier times.

The arc lamps were very good to light up the exteriors and provide 2000 -4000 candlepower while the power of an incandescent bulb is only 16 candlepower. The arc light was so powerful that it was used to light up the exteriors.

Arc light is said to be visible from 5 miles away and is known to be very powerful. Arc lights were powered by generators. When you put on a arc light you can see a spark running back and forth from pole to pole.
