Light fixtures attached to a continuous device called track, for the purpose of illumination or decoration is called track lighting. There are indoor track lighting and outdoor track lighting. Track lighting that is installed inside the house is mainly for task lighting, as in an art gallery, to illuminate a row of paintings. However, outdoors, track lighting is used both as a functional and a decorative light fixture.
Advantages of outdoor track lighting
The most important advantage of outdoor track lighting is that much space can saved on the ground, since it is hung from above, perhaps on a continuous high beam or hung from a tree. Since multiples light fixtures are connected to a single electrical outlet, a lot of space can be illuminated without much space being taken up.
The second advantage of outdoor track lighting is its versatility. There are flexible track lighting options that allows you to direct light in whichever way you choose. You can also choose how many light fixtures you want on a single track and how they are spaced.
The third advantage is that outdoor track lighting is very easily installed. In most cases, the homeowners themselves can install it, with just the basic understanding of wiring.
Another advantage is that outdoor track lighting, especially the flexible ones, can be hung at a height chosen by you. They are flexible in their placement, and there is no question of anyone tripping over wires or bumping against a light fixture.
Track lighting can be an ideal method of lighting for outdoors because you don’t need different electrical outlets for each of the light fixtures on the track. Therefore, often, the electrical outlet is inside the house, and the track can go out of the house into the garden, and light up specific points to either beautify it or to provide light.
The disadvantages of outdoor track lighting
The light fixtures on the tracks cannot operate independently. This is one major disadvantage of outdoor track lighting. You cannot opt for just one or two to light up. You cannot dim a few. They will all light up or they will all be off.
Another disadvantage is that outdoor track lighting cannot flood an area with light. They can just decorate a few specific points. On Christmas tree, they look great as decorative lights, but beyond the tree, they shine little light. You cannot read under a track light. You will need another type of light source for that.
